Pepperl Fuchs KFD0-TR-Ex1 isolated barrier: Buyer Guide for Pt100-to-4-20 mA Conversion

The Pepperl Fuchs KFD0-TR-Ex1 isolated barrier is a single-channel RTD converter designed to connect a 2-wire or 3-wire Pt100 temperature sensor on the field side with a 4-20 mA control-side loop. It combines signal conversion, selectable temperature linearization and galvanic isolation in a compact DIN-rail module for industrial instrumentation systems.

Because KFD0-TR-Ex1 is loop powered, buyers should review the complete loop voltage and load rather than treating it as a conventional separately powered signal conditioner. The model is especially relevant when a hazardous-area Pt100 signal must be transferred to a control or monitoring system with clear fault behavior.

How the temperature signal path works

The field-side terminals accept a Pt100 resistance temperature detector. The module measures the sensor resistance, applies the selected range and optional temperature linearization, then represents the result as a 4-20 mA output on the control side. Galvanic isolation separates input and output circuits, helping reduce unwanted current paths between field instrumentation and the receiving control system.

For a 3-wire Pt100 connection, all conductors and terminal assignments must be checked carefully. Lead resistance can affect measurement accuracy, and the official data specifies a maximum lead resistance of 100 ohms per line. Do not copy wiring from a different KF module only because the housing looks similar.

Range selection and fault indication

The KFD0-TR-Ex1 uses DIP switches and a rotary switch for configuration. Adjustable zero and span allow the transmitter to be matched to the intended process temperature window. The selectable linearized span is narrower than the non-linearized adjustment range, so the required measuring range must be checked against the official configuration instructions before commissioning.

Sensor breakage detection supports maintenance by driving the current upscale to at least 22 mA, subject to the loop conditions. The receiving analog input should be configured so that this fault current is recognized as an alarm rather than interpreted as a valid high-temperature reading.

Where this isolated barrier is commonly evaluated

• Pt100 temperature measurement in chemical and petrochemical process units.
• Tank, vessel and pipeline temperature monitoring where intrinsic-safety requirements apply.
• Migration or replacement projects for existing Pepperl+Fuchs KF-series barrier panels.
• Control cabinets that require a compact 20 mm DIN-rail signal interface.
• Maintenance spares for temperature loops with 4-20 mA receiving cards.

Compatibility checks before replacement

An exact model match is the safest starting point, but a replacement review should still confirm terminal wiring, sensor type, selected range, linearization setting, loop voltage, receiving load and hazardous-area documentation. The approval markings and entity parameters must suit the installed field circuit and local compliance requirements.

Also confirm cabinet space, DIN-rail arrangement and the presence of matching terminal blocks. Accessories and removable terminals should be listed separately in the quotation when their inclusion is not explicit.

Related Pepperl+Fuchs signal interface searches

Buyers comparing KF-series devices may also search for KFD0 current repeaters, KFD2 transmitter power supplies, switch amplifiers and solenoid drivers. These products can share a similar enclosure family while performing different electrical functions. Do not substitute another KFD0 or KFD2 model based only on width, color or terminal appearance.
